I just loved this performance; the Grateful Dead poured their love into it. Starting with Bob and his guitar playing rhythm. But what I remember most was Garcia, Lesh, Hart&BillK ripping it up. Great Fun,

A rippin' Jack Straw, and the rest of the show seems to flow quite nicely. A nice surprise with the Help-->Slip-->Franklin's. Contrary to what some think, I enjoy the sound of Jerry's new guitar.

I really hate to be a cynic but I just can't roll with anything post Brent, save the MSG 90 run. The magic was just gone. This show seems to have some moments, but I'm not sure what the hype about the H->S->F is or the Jack for that matter. Check out 9-10-91 for a great post-Brent H->S->F. Jerry's new guitar was a definite downgrade from his Irvings. IDK, judge for yourself

....remember that bumper sticker?
This run at Autzen stadium was my first time in Oregon. We flew out just for this run of two nites(I was still in high school :) )....and it was worth every penny of that airline ticket. When I hear people saying how shows from the '90s suck...I think"what do they think is good?" I assume its some shows from, let me guess..the '70s?..hahaha
Dont get me wrong..that era is full of great performances, but what they never admit is how full of shit they are...and the amount of shit shows that also plagued the '70s...from bobby goin thru puberty and singing out of key all the time and JUST LIKE THE '90s...jerry forgot lyrics then as well..plenty of times!...This show and many of shows from late summer and fall of '93 have a beautiful sound..Jerrys guitar sounds GREAT...as do the rest of the boys. That being said....the only reason no official GD releases of anything post '90 is simply that only old heads that toured mainly in the '70s are who get to choose what officially gets released and thats absurd!!...anyone who ACTUALLY listens or better yet went to these shows knows the truth!...there are SO MANY GREAT PERFORMANCES FROM '90-'95...they just get bad reviews from those who will only "like" the shows they toured on...its not even a question that '87 to '91 were the bands BEST YEARS...hands down..if you dont agree ...then you dont know Grateful Dead. Stop hating and posting your shitty opinions. ..becuz opinions need some sort of factual evidence and obviously those who say '90s GD suck never heard or saw that era.

Subject: Not a 5 Star Show BUT a worth Help>Slip>Franks
I finally migrated to '93 looking for the hidden gems. There are reasons why not a single official GD release is from a year later than '92....
Y'all grabbed my attention with the meta-analysis of 61 reviews topping at 4.4 stars. However....5 stars = a perfect show and this one is not that. Blown lyrics in Music Never Stopped and-of all things-Bertha, amongst others. Why are there so few few perfect Help > Slip > Franklin's triads throughout the entire archive? Jerry so often flubs a line or several in what is lyrically one of the most meaningful passages of music I have ever heard. That said, this one is worthy of rebroadcast to large audiences in that regard as Jerry just barely finds his Way On The Help while totally nailing Franklin's and the musicianship just cooks. For that matter, the whole show based on instrumentalism is close to 5 stars but the flubbages of songs that should be old hat constitute a 3.
Other Highlights....Althea is syrupy sweet. Days Between is powerful, brooding, like China Doll but more introspective and seemingly autobiographical...and sad. I actually rather like Liberty though many of the songs the Dead introduced in the 90s fell very flat. Samson and Wheel > Miracle are rollicking bundles of joy. You'll find some of that here.
I will recommend this show for listening because:
Musicianship: 4.5
Vocals: 3
Sound Quality: 5
The only better '93 show I know of is 3/27 Albany where somehow everybody gets every word absolutely perfect and the LMA product is indeed a perfect 5 star.

I was one of the 2 people that survived the car accident driving back to SCU from this show... this was my second Dead show ever, and the weekend trip with these people will always remain one of the best memories I'll ever have. Thanks to all the tapers for capturing these moments and allowing us to keep these memories so tangible. I miss my friends desperately, but am so thankful that I got to experience their last show with them.... magical doesn't begin to capture the essence of those 2 days we had together.

My first show-sixteen years old-my first time experimenting with, ahem, "real" psychotropics. The most intense emotional and spiritual connection I have ever felt with a group of people...and I went to the show with one other Head I had just met.
Sure, it's not the band's greatest show ever, but at least one person had the closest thing to a religious experience he had/has ever experienced on that hot, beautiful day in Eugene. The shows that I saw in those last few, final years after this put in perspective for me how good this show was for the time. It wasn't only my altered state that convinced me that the band was on.
The second set in particular is very good, from H>S>F to Drums to Days Between.

I was told that Bob Dylan gave Weir the Fender that he disabled in a fit. It wasn't the first time that guitar caused riffs. It cracked popped like a loose connection was usually to loud but always sparked a great show from Jerry who always relished being the linchpin.

Sounds Great it was broadcast on KLCC-FM Eugene, OR. Day of the show (both days)I recorded it on video tape (audio only) so it's completely uncut including the indigo girls set , Ken Kesey, Trip Somer, David Gans, Downtown Deb interview. Additionally, I have most of the first night but my recorder starts late in the first set (so I missed the first three songs) I do have the entire second set.

What a great sounding show. I remember there being an FM broadcast that, in addition to the shows, really had some good stuff before and after... I'll always remember them playing Ken Kesey telling that story about Big Double the Bear!!!
Sliding across that bridge over the water into the grounds of the stadium was amazing. What a great place Eugene is...
The sounds of the acoustic guitars from the opener and that twingee sound coming from Jer was something else in that big ass open stadium. How sweet it all was. I remember some confusion during the Jack Straw but had no idea of the shit that was going on back stage. I enjoyed the Broken Arrow as well - that crazy ass octave pedal or whatever it was making that sound coming from Jer was beautiful...

Just listening to this show and really enjoying it except for ruminations on the previous comment about how there ain't nothing wrong with giving 5 stars to something you like for what it is.
Nobody coming around here should have any illusion that when they listen to an 90s show they're hearing a different band than the one that played on the hallowed date of 3-1-69. So if you're going to go Siskel and Ebert on these shows, then do what the fat guy does, give some thumbs up based on what else was playing in the theater that week.
Imagine if roger started every review saying, "This movie's OK but it's nothing like the kind of movies they were making in the 1970s, those were my favorite." when that happens it's time for the home.
So, I'm giving this show four stars because it's better than four of five of the top 5 billboard albums for 1993. (#1 "the bodyguard soundtrack", #2 Kenny G "Breathless" #4 Janet Jackson "Janet" and #5 Billy Ray Cyrus "Some Gave All").
slowhand was #3 with unplugged, sorry deadheads.
And I like robbie robertson's take on "broken arrow" better.
and the music never stops

I am sitting at my first ever bought computer and listening to this at the age of 36. I guess you could call me a late bloomer when it comes to computers. I however was not a late bloomer to dosin and this was definitely the highest show I had ever been at. I was 22 and had a lust for tryin anything psychedelic. I licked a puddle of acid that some kind broken leg gentleman gave me (thank you). I actually had to leave the during Jack Straw cause I was so high. I trampled my way towards the creek, took my clothes off and lay on top of a thorn bush. I lay there until the last song of the first set, shook myself out of it and walked over to some people for help. I was cut up, naked and laughing/crying at the same time. They got some volunteers from inside the show to assist me back in-and I mean back in. I snuck away once inside and went to the top of bleachers and proceeded to ball me eyes out for joy. I made it back from the scariest and strangest trip I ever had and was listening to the best music on the planet with the setting sun. I was never quite the same after that-Thank God and the Grateful Dead.

DRUMS / SPACE / WRAP IT UP / (THE PROMISE OF COLD MT DEWS AND F'IN GREAT VEGGIE BURRITOS IN THE LOT....) YES DRUMS WERE GOOD. DRUMS ARE GOOD FOR YOU!! YOU YOUNG, POST BRENT 90'S TOUCH O GREY PEOPLE - GET YOUR ACTS TOGETHER. JERRY'S DEAD. IT'S OVER! YOU VETERANS - SHAME ON YOU FOR NOT GIVING PROPS TO MR HART!
THERE ARE OTHER HIGHLIGHTS HERE BUT THE DRUMS ARE COOLEST EVER!.

Bobby's gone during Jack Straw but Jerry and Phil march on.
Even at Autzen's highest and most distant vantage point everyone around is sure Bobby is smiling directly at them.

If you're a big fan of the vince-era (not too many of you out there), then this one is a good listen. The boys are showing a good amount of energy for 1993. The H>S>F is good (as always), and so it TMNS, but aside from that there are no other scorchers.
I agree with all of those people who dislike that "acoustic" sound on Jerry's guitar. Interesting idea, but it didn't really work.
This show gets a "pity 4," because it really isn't all that bad for 1993. Really more of a 3.5.

These were the only shows that I ever got on an airplane to go to. Jerry was on the cover of Rolling Stone at that time, and he talked about The Days Between in the interview, which I read on the plane. It was absolutely sunny in Eugene by the time the show started on Saturday, and it stayed that way until near the end of the Sunday show. The crowd at Autzen was spectacular. The spinner girls next to the stage were entrancing; I swear that I could see Jerry's notes coming out of their fingertips. Near the end of the Sunday show when they played Days, the sun finally got behind a few puffy clouds near the horizon behind the stage and just above those low lying hills outside of Eugene. I will never forget the image of Jerry singing that song at that moment. Spine-tingling stuff. It was the best time I ever had at a show next to Soldier Field 91, which was the best time that I ever had with my clothes on.

Subject: Ripper of a show!
Subject: Ripper of a show!
As a late bloomer to the Dead (first show was Vegas 1991 - but saw 69 shows from 1991-1995), I know all too well the progression of Jerry's playing over those years. The 1991-1992 part of my career contained most of the truly mind-blowing experiences, but there were many in 1993 (1994 even) that I put on the very top of my overall list.
This show in particular was WAY up there on my list. No question about it that Jerry "brung it" to Eugene. I was Phil side about 50 feet from the stage, and I was riveted from the first note. Jerry was in total control both musically and vocally, even lyrically!
Someone mentioned his new guitar, and I think that his enthusiasm for his new toy came through that day. I have to admit however that I really didn't like the sound of the "Lightning Bolt" as many have said, it just didn't have the pure emotional tone that Rosebud had (I really missed his 1991 sound). Oh well, if it made him happy then I'm happy... I am just glad to have had him be here long enough for me to have 4 life-defining years of adventure and bliss.
With the exception of Jack Straw > Bertha, I think it all started to really kick in about Music Never Stopped., so tight! Unbelievable rendition! What an indicator of great things to come... The second set opener was one of the best H>S>F in the later Dead years... He doesn't miss a note and weaves Franklin's in such a sweet way, those first chords after Slipknot... man, the waves of energy pulsating back and forth from the stage across our heads bouncing off the back of the stadium was literally tangible! One of those peak moments where everyone just comes together (crowd included) and takes it over the top.
One clear recollection I have is right after Days Between, a girl turned to me and said "What was that?" My mind and heart had just been blown completely open and my face melted, and I just coudn't formulate any human words... Finally I was able to tell her the name of the song, and I felt the words tumble out like stones in my mouth. It was a very strange experience, to have been taken so far from myself that I couldn't immediately re-exist in normal time and space. What a testament to the power that was flowing that day! An enthusiastic 5 stars!

It was a very strange experience, to have been taken so far from myself that I couldn't immediately re-exist in normal time and space. What a testament to the power that was flowing that day! An enthusiastic 5 stars!

Drove down from Alaska after spending a summer at Denali National Park with a group of deadheads and initiates. An angel named Elton opened up his tape collection to us and we spent a summer of bliss getting way into dead music in an amazing natural space. If you are out there Elton, Tree, Hung, Brett....drop a line. Amazing shows....strange dosed goodbye - eve3rybody going different directions. Yes, in 1993 we felt the spirit of community and were so moved to pick up trash in the lot after the weekend. I miss those simple sweet days.

have to agree with Pat kelley, I thought the introduction of Jer's new guitar had a negative effect for the remaining years. Just didn't like it. Some people dig and that's cool. As for this show, much better than most of the summer gigs. Both nights in Eugene and night 1 at shoreline are preety safe bets.

I'm fairly low-tech, and I resisted getting an iPod for years (partly for budget reasons). Well, this had been loaded by a real veteran Deadhead, and was the only post-91 show on the iPod. I love it.

Note To Dstone5553, Mr. PatKelley is correct. This is actually the second night of the debut of The Lightnin' Bolt, a guitar built for Garcia by Stephen Cripe (a fan from Florida and skilled Carpenter). This was not an Irwin Guitar (i.e. The Wolf, The Tiger, or Rosebud). It has nothing to do with lighter string gauges and everything to do with a totally different guitar with a piezo pickup that gave it that "acoustic" tone.
Not saying I agree or disagree with patkelley in terms of his feelings about the sound of the instrument, just saying he's right that this was not The Tiger or Rosebud or the Wolf being played.
Note to Maxwell3 for the record, the H>S>F that everyone is lauding was actually the set II opener, not the set I closer.
I love the story about Mr. Weir losing his cool during Jack Straw. I wonder if he was angry with Mr. Healy...it wasn't long after this that Healy was asked to leave.

I tend to agree that the Dead's best years were behind them at this point, but this is a sentimental favorite, being, altogether, a pretty solid show, and the second GD concert I had ever seen (the first being the day before). The Help>Slip>Frank really crackles, and just remembering the opening notes of Franklin's echoing out across the 55,000 fans that summer day kinda brings a tear to my eye. For some reason, I also really like Phil's Broken Arrow, just seems so homely and plaintive. About as good as later shows get, I would say.

This was my last gd show; a matinee that was over before sunset. Great quality sbd but thin on the bass for some reason. I use band-extrapolation to fix it. High-end is crystal clear. Bob's guitar malfunction opened the door for a great extended jam on Jack Straw. I heard he lost it backstage. I just saw him leave for a while. Nice jam on Music. Great help/slip/frank. Very hot day. 90+ degrees. Indigo girls opened and Huey Lewis was there too. I don't know who MNWolfman is but I met those guys that weekend. They stopped by my friend's apt (conveniently next to the stadium). They were from the younger hippie crowd at SCU. We were distraught at the news of their subsequent demise on the road home. So young. Apparently it was their last show too.

I don't know about that - but I was there, and it was a Bomb-A$$ Grateful Dead concert. The only thing it was missing was the SOTM from the night (day) before. Anybody ever says the Dead didn't play anything cool in the Vince era - I sit them down in my basement w/ the monster sound system, turn it up to Concert Level Volume, turn the lights OFF - and play the Help->Slip->Frank from this show. The only thing they say after that is "Can I get a copy?"
I also use this same technique and music to initiate 'newbies' into the band. Just the intro count-off to Help On The Way (and the airhorn blast from somewhere) usually scares the hell out of the uninitiated. It's quite fun...
If you want Spring '78 level craziness - listen to a spring '78 show. If you want to hear those guys 15 years (!) later taking another run at 'IT' - then this is a good place to go.
Sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

I vividly remember Bob not getting the sound he wanted out of his guitar and stomping off stage in the middle of the jam of Jack Straw. Poor Parish was trying to help him, but Weir just kept slammin' his guitar into the side of a garbage can. Meanwhile, Phil and Jerry moved center; the drummers were smiling and Vince looked lost but kept playing chords. It's almost as though they were waiting for Weir to come back and they didn't know what to do (or else they were afforded the little-known luxury of playing the jam in Jack Straw for 8 minutes minus the rhythm section)
After Bob comes back and sings the chorus, there's a minute or so before Bertha when you can see everyone talking into their mikes but you can't hear them 'cause of their setup onstage. Oh to be a fly on the wall for that conversation. Otherwise, there's a heartfelt Broken Arrow (although Phil strains on it); some nice Jerry leads on Althea, and a pretty sweet H>S>F to close the set. Second set, the Corrina is worth listening to because the entire band is really trying to figure out how to play this song. I'll never forget the sight of Weir losing his shit, though, while the rest of the band looks down at their feet and just plays....

Ummm. he has used the same guitar for a long time and was using the same one in 94 and 93 that you are calling such a bad sounding instrument. It's the strings that are different, which are lighter, it gave him the accoustic sound he was interested in. He is not a stagnant musician..if you want that then look for ted nugent, I think he would do it for you...

I dont think that ANY show in which Garcia used that awful, ridiculous, pathetic sounding guitar he used in parts of '93 and'94 can possibly merit anything more than 4 stars. That instrument sounded just terrible and, I think, ruined most of the good performances the band had during that period. My guess is that he was going for a more acoustic sounding electric guitar. But the tone is absolutley flat and there is no sustain, and none of the cool effects Garcia used that we all love sounded good. Compared to the beautiful, round, full tone of his other guitars, this one sounds like a choking animal. Athough, I love this Jack Straw

this show was good. not great. The source/sound quality is top shelf, though. a 3 star performance. as far as Thai's comments, well that's great buddy, im happy for you and all the happiness the band brought you, but giving every show 5 stars does little for the more savvy collector who is not looking to reflect back on a good parking lot scene or an acid trip gone good or bad per these reviews. I find a lot of value in reviews that actually speak to the quality of the source and quality of playing for the respective show.
The Help/slip/frank on this show is absolutely wild. Everything leading up to it (ie the first set) is very average/run of the mill. They finish the set strong, though.

I'll just add to the chorus of accolades for this one. We sat in the back left of the stands, because it was one of the only spots that got some shade later in the show. The band loved Eugene, Jerry showed up and an excellent latter era show emerged. Give it a listen and judge for yourself.

It's very easy for me to write off the last ten or so years of Dead music as junk - it's miserable to listen to the out-of-it, disconnected, one-foot-in-the grave Garcia who started showing up in the early 80's. Now and then I find a late-era show like this one and my heart is warmed over. Goddamn if Jerry doesn't pull himself together here and turn out a brilliant performance. Jer's voice is above-par here for this era, too, the band is ON, and those synth tones are down in the mix where they should be for once.

The first time I heard this show was the summer of 94. At that time, my favorite band was Deicide, if it wasn't death-metal, I didn't like it. A friend played a low-gen tape of this show at my house one day, fifty shows later I was calling myself a deadhead. The Jack Straw is smoking, but the songs that stole my heart were the Broken Arrow, Corinna, and Days. This show is really something special.

DeadPod, are you for real? What planet you from, bro? Either you weren't there or you don't get the Dead. Please.
We were second row, Jerry side, watched Bob smash His guitar to pieces in the beginning of the Straw JAM, not tune, Bob was not missed. We came back to earth when He re-entered stage left and Jerry glanced over as if to say, "oh, you're back".
Very kind show, very, very kind parking lot seen. This was the last great show with a "lot" scene.
For all of you so called "critics" and post Brent nineties Dead, blah blah blah blah. Any night I had the chance to see Mr. Garcia play was a GREAT night. I don't dare critique the man/band that brought me so fat every time I saw them. I'll take the nineties Dead any time. Their worst night was my greatest, every time. So please quit with all the Siskel and Ebert reviews. I'd like to see any one of you expert citics hold half of a candle to any one of the Boys on one of their "off" nights.

Well, I can't even begin to tell you about the gravity of this show for me...but I'll try.
Coming from Santa Clara, a bunch of us college kids rented vans and drove to the show from the bay area. We had seen Jerry Band at Shoreline the weekend before, and we were primed for more. The first day was pretty good, huey lewis, the killer SOTM, pretty good. the best post-show $1 grilled cheese i've ever had- partially because I had to wait 20 minutes while the on-tour vacationing executive chef "prepared" it. I kept saying "hey, that's perfect" and he would respond, "NOT YET!"
Anyway, we were at the back of the Duck stadium, looking directly into the sun. couldn't see the band to save our lives. No matter. Jack Straw for days, beautiful broken arrow, and then a 2nd set from heaven. It was truly the last pinnacle Dead experience for me.
Tragically, on the way home, one of our vans had an accident. We watched as the the driver of the 1st van fell asleep, and 4 dear friends lost their lives. The yin and yang of the whole day is almost too much to bear, and it haunts me to this day. 2 of the 6 survived. GDP sent a bolt shaped bouquet to each family. It was almost too much to deal with. Long time ago, but fresh as yesterday in my mind.
God bless you all.

This is certainly the best show of 1993. If not the best show of the post-Brent era. It is also arguably the last great, GREAT show the Dead ever played. As already mentioned, the show is kick-started by Jerry and Phil playing their butts off in Jack Straw to cover for Weir's technical/guitar problems. As of this point there is no looking back, and they just go from stength to amazing strength (from sea to shining sea?). Even the harmonies in Broken Arrow are flawless! Sound quality is superb also. Really clean and nicely mixed - sounds as good as an official release. I wouldn't be surprised if it makes it (and I hope it does) to a Dick's Picks someday!
